My brilliant deduction: People like videos.
I have many such brilliant deductions. Example: Given that the spare key is 50 minutes away at home, it is probably not a good idea to lock your keys in the car. Another example: Ignoring the uses of sunscreen while at a beach much closer to the equator than Vermont is--also not a good idea.
So I had an idea.
This is how I combined PowerPoint and iMovie's capabilities to create an awesome video with interesting, animated media:
Next, I recorded my timing of the slides using the PowerPoint record feature while I recorded my voice as a podcast in GarageBand. I record my audio in GarageBand because I have a nice Audio Technica mike that does a much better job at capturing voice depth and quality than my computer's built-in mike does.
Then, because the exportation of my timed and recorded slides resulted in a pile of digital mush for some reason, I used my screen capture app to record a replay of the timed slides.
I exported the resulting video from screen capture into my iMovie program. I then rearranged it a bit and added in the audio track from GarageBand. Then I exported the finished video and put it on YouTube. Voila!
If you're confused, let me summarize that process for both PC and Mac users:
- Put your informational movie together in PowerPoint.
- Record the timing of your slides using the "Record" feature.
- Record your voice explaining the slides while recording the PP timing, so that the slides and audio mesh nicely.
- Export the audio recording.
- Export the timed slide video. (Or screen capture while running the recording if, like me, you run into trouble.)
- Import into your video program. Add any bells and whistles that you want, which your video program has and which PowerPoint doesn't (such as royalty-free stock footage, music for background, or footage of yourself).
- Layer the audio in and ensure it's timed nicely with the slides.
- Export your video.
To show you how it came out, here's the finished product. I expect it to be the first of many, and hopefully next time I can find a way to eliminate that really annoying green vertical line on the right side that showed up with no invitation or explanation whatsoever. Seriously. The nerve of some technologies.
Anyway, enjoy!
